Le Roman de Perceforest Evening Bag

A quiet sovereign. An original painting in soft Impressionist watercolor, in the manner of the turn of the century — luminous, slightly unfinished, the edges dissolving into pastel rose and mist.

Designed in New York, the artwork is printed on fine Nappa leather and the bag is handmade to order in London. The design draws from Le Roman de Perceforest, the 14th-century French romance that contains the earliest known written version of the Sleeping Beauty tale. In it, the princess Zellandine is cursed so that “from the first thread of linen that she spins from her distaff a shard will pierce her finger and cast her into a sudden sleep, from which she’ll never wake until it’s sucked out.” She is later found resting in a richly adorned bed, “sleeping so soundly that it seemed like she would sleep forever.”

The front of the bag holds a rose-entwined castle. Intentionally, a modern Sleeping Beauty at rest in a four-poster bed, silk eye mask drawn is inside the bag. A small quill marks the reverse.

A graduate of American University and Georgetown University, she studied drawing and art history in Rome — an influence that continues to shape her work.
